4th SLS 'launches' new support center

By Lt. Col. Lee Rosen

4th Space Launch Squadron commander

"Four, three, two, one we have ignition and liftoff of NROL-22." While the words were said, the Delta IV perched on Space Launch Complex-6 didn't move an inch.

On June 9, the 4th Space Launch Squadron inaugurated the new Engineering Launch Support Center by supporting the launch of a Delta IV rocket simulation.

The test run was one of multiple internal launch rehearsals executed in preparation for the first Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle launch from Vandenberg - the Delta IV NROL-22, scheduled for March 2005.

These rehearsals provide the launch team opportunities to practice their day of launch mission assurance roles and responsibilities to include status tracking, communications, countdown processing, and anomaly risk assessment.

The 4th SLS technical team is a compilation of military, civilian and contractor engineers, maintainers, and acquisitions professionals brought together to provide government insight into contractor launch activities.

During a rigorous, 4.5 hour launch simulation, the 20-member Delta IV technical team, along with numerous 4th SLS, EELV System Program Office and National Reconnaissance Office personnel, ran the new launch support center through its paces, testing out the communications, connectivity and audio/visual systems.

The ELSC is a collaborative project between the 30th Space Wing, the EELV SPO in Los Angeles and the NRO. It was completed on schedule and under budget - not a small feat by any standards.

This state-of-the-art facility used for both the Atlas V and Delta IV weapons systems features a 40' video wall; touch panel communications consoles, and state of the art sound system.

EELV is the future of space launch. Both the Atlas V and Delta IV will provide assured access to space for the next 30 years, launching our nation's highest priority satellites for our war-fighters and national decision makers.
